Certified Chiropractic Assistant Information

The NCCA provides top-tier education to chiropractic assistants. Our programs comply with all North Carolina state requirements. The NCCA is your educational partner, while the North Carolina Board of Chiropractic Examiners (NCBOCE) is the certifying authority.

All chiropractic assistants who interact directly with patients must hold a Clinical CA Certification. This certification comes in two levels:

  1. *Level I: General Clinical Certification: Essential for basic clinical duties.
  2. Level II: X-ray Certification: Required for those who will be taking X-rays. Important Note: Without Level II certification, CAs cannot lawfully take X-rays.

*According to North Carolina General Statute 90-143.4, new chiropractic assistants working in a clinical setting must obtain Level I certification within 180 days of starting their position.

All upcoming NCCA CA Education can be found in our Event Calendar. When registering for Certifications, please consider the education deadlines outlined in each event to ensure adequate preparation time prior to the in-person class dates.

To obtain a Clinical CA Certification (Level I), CAs must complete a 24-hour course, which includes 18 hours of online learning and 6 hours of in-person training. This certification is offered four times per year in conjunction with the NCBOCE exam schedule.

For those seeking X-ray certification (Level II), a 50-hour program is required. This program combines 75% online learning with 25% in-person training. It is offered three times per year in conjunction with the NCBOCE exam schedule and aligns with NCBOCE requirements for basic X-ray proficiency.

Recertification: Every two years by June 30th,, individuals must complete 6 hours of continuing education to maintain a  Level I Clinical CA Certification. Those who also hold a Level II X-ray Certification must complete an additional 6 hours of X-ray-specific continuing education. The expiration dates for a specific CA can be found on each CA’s certificate or the NCBOCE’s website.

CCA Level I and Level II Simultaneous Enrollment

Effective January 1, 2020, an applicant for the Radiological Technologist Certification (CCA II) must have a current Chiropractic Clinical Assistant Certification (CCA I) prior to applying for the Radiological Technologist Examination.

A student may be registered for both Level I CCA certification and  Level II X-Ray certification courses simultaneously; However, an applicant must pass the Level I examination before being allowed to sit for the Level II (X-ray) examination.

The NCCA arranges the education schedule so that this can be accomplished in most situations.
